Established in 1936, the Chinese Taipei Football Association has a long history. Their so-called golden age lasted from 1950-1970. Chinese Taipei was crowned champion of Asia in the Asian Games for two consecutive tournaments, in 1954 and 1958 and this good form continued into the 1960s, where they captured third place in the 1960 Asia Cup and beat Korea Rep. in qualifying to finish fourth in the main tournament in 1968. However in 1974 they left the Asian Football Confederation and Chinese Taipei attached itself to the Oceania Football Confederation. Then in 1989 they were re-instated to the Asian Football Confederation and started anew but their previous glory had become something of the past. Women's football continued to develop and they participated in the 1991 FIFA Women’s World Cup and made it to the final of the 1999 AFC Women’s Asian Football Cup. Currently they are considered equals with DPR Korea, China PR, Japan and Korea Rep. in terms of ability. A plan to develop men’s football began with a Taiwan city league in 2006. They hosted the men’s and women’s East Asian Football Federation Championships 2010 Semi-finals in August 2009 and are proving serious in their attempts to revitalize football culture in Taiwan.
