10 FOOTBALL ASSOCIATIONS

GUAM FA

President, Guam Football Association:Richard K. Lai

It is with great honor and pride that Guam Football Association continues to rapidly develop with one of the fastest growing football federations in the world, the East Asian Football Federation.

Without the support of EAFF, its members and sponsors, GFA could not have accomplished the many football milestones we have in recent years, including ascension in FIFA world rankings through victories in more matches against fellow EAFF members and notably narrowing performance gaps against Asian football heavyweights in the region.

Through Guam’s eye-opening performances at recent international tournaments, more of our local players have been spotted and offered professional contracts or U.S. collegiate athletic scholarships, thus providing a clearer pathway for Guam’s rising elite youth players.

Aside from player progression, the EAFF has supported GFA in overall development, including tournament hosting and training for coaches and referees. As the host venue for the past few EAFF East Asian Cup preliminary competitions, Guam FA staff has gained the experience to effectively manage the logistics necessary for international football tournaments, making our tropical island a viable football competition destination. Through technical training and exchanges between member nations, the EAFF also has assisted in raising the level of our local coaches and referees.

Football has become the most popular sport in Guam, especially among the youth, thanks to the support of FIFA, AFC, EAFF, GFA members, and sponsors. We are at a pivotal point in our development, and hope that with the continued support of the EAFF, we may someday reach new levels that we only dream of today.

Guam Football Association is one of the fastest growing and most organized sports associations in Guam, an island paradise in the Pacific Ocean with a population of roughly 180,000. The Guam FA has over 5,000 registered players, coaches and officials in yearly amateur leagues for men, women, and youth, as well as futsal and beach soccer leagues. All Guam FA leagues, as well as some interscholastic events, are held at the Guam FA National Training Center, a multi-million dollar facility with two full-size turf pitches, one full-size natural grass pitch, one mini turf pitch for youth, a beach soccer pitch, as well as futsal courts. The Training Center is currently undergoing more upgrades, including the installation of solar energy panels and the development of a National Academy headquarters.

Richard K. Lai, association president, leads the organization and nine other executives and executive committee members. The Guam FA has recruited Gary White, a former national team head coach in the Bahamas and the British Virgin Islands, as technical director and head coach of the Matao, Guam men’s national football team. Homegrown coach Brett Maluwelmeng has been selected as head coach of the Masakåda, Guam women’s national football team.
