In order to win the championship, Korea DPR needed a win or a draw, whereas China PR had to win and wait for the result of the next match between Korea Rep. and Japan. "We have to face the powerful China PR team in this hot weather, so we will play a defensive game in the first half and launch our attack in the second," commented Korea DPR's head coach Kim Myong Song, but he was forced to alter his original plan early on in the match. In the 14th minute, Xie Hui was struck down by a Korea DPR defender and China PR gained a penalty kick. As the goalkeeper jumped to the left, the kicker, Li Yan, rammed the ball into the right side of the goal, giving China PR an early lead.

Desperately needing a goal, Korea DPR used forward charges and determination as their weapon and slowly began regaining control of the game. 35 minutes into the first half, Korea DPR's fierce attack had the Chinese defense trapped in front of the goal and it seemed only a matter of time that they would equalize. However, Korea DPR's futile attempts failed to meet the goal net, and the match proceeded to the second half.

China PR patiently held out and launched a counter-attack in the 67th minute. Xie Hui dodged a defender in front of the goal and delivered a clear and open shot, driving the ball in the middle of the goal to give China PR a 2-point lead. China PR had another chance in the 81st minute-the offside trap the Korea DPR defense set up failed and Gao Lin faced the goalie one-on-one with the ball, but he could not score the third goal which would have certainly given China PR a guaranteed win.

In the 85th minute, Korea DPR's An Chol Hyok's header hit the bar and just missed. Korea DPR had other opportunities, but the Chinese eleven went all out to defend their goal and managed to secure a 2-0 victory. Korea Rep. lost in the following match, and the second East Asian Football Championship title was given to China PR, with Korea DPR finishing in third place.

After the match, China PR head coach Zhu Guang Hu reflected, "Winning this championship is a great honor. Our team showed improvement in understanding tactics and having a strong will to win. I am happy we fulfilled our objective." Korea DPR head coach Kim Myong Song commented, "We must work on maintaining our composure and playing our game even when we are behind."
