11th June marked the start of the second round of qualifiers in the Asia section. Hong Kong, part of Group C, made an enviable start with two consecutive wins.
Coach Kim PAN-GON spoke about the condition of the team at the end of their first match as well as the prospects for the squad in its upcoming games – to continue until March of next year.
Hong Kong (Group C)
11-06-2015 / HONG KONG 7 - 0 BHUTAN
16-06-2015 / HONG KONG 2 - 0 MALDIVES
After their first match against Bhutan (11th June, in Hong Kong)
The Bhutan national team is a fantastic side. However, we were able to seize the day and outplay them. Our side scored early in the game, and never slackened in attack even after scoring seven goals. I was pleased with the many chances we were able to create.
If I had to point out a problem in team performance, it would be the number of times our concentration levels dropped, which gave the other team the chance to conduct a counterattack.
The Upcoming Second Round Qualifiers in the Asia Section
Group C is teeming with teams with experience in international tournaments. It is predicted the games against China and Qatar will be the toughest. Furthermore, with the domestic Hong Kong league starting in the middle of September, the side may find it difficult to optimise its condition in the off-season games against China (3rd September, in China) and Qatar (8th September, in Qatar). The team also faces multiple problems of high altitude and heat, as well as time difference, in their away matches against Bhutan and the Maldives. Another problem is the number of key players that have withdrawn from the team due to injuries.
The players are expected to make a comeback by September, increasing the goal scoring potential of the side, as well as allowing the team to organize a stronger defense line.
The team will band together when it goes into its upcoming games, with the hope of finishing in 3rd place in Group C – though we will play for 2nd place.
Fans filled the stadium for both of our two second round qualifiers held at home to support us. Compared to the past, many local people are watching the Hong Kong Representative Team, and cheering our side. Regardless of whether we win or lose, I would like the people of Hong Kong to continue supporting Hong Kong football.
