For the first time in team history, Japan women’s national team is the new champion of Asia. Thanks to the header
scored by Azusa Iwashimizu on the 28-minute mark into the first half, Japan beat the reigning champion Australia
1-0 in the final of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup on May 25th 2014 in Vietnam. This is another milestone Japan
women’s team has achieved after claiming the title of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany. The glory
was not only defined by Japan’s historic victory on Sunday evening as they also received the Fair Play award and
captain Aya Miyama was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament for her consistent performances on the
field.
As the new champion of Asia and defending champion of the World Cup, Japan qualified for the FIFA Women’s
World Cup next year in Canada together with China and Korea Republic who finished at the 3rd and the 4th place of
the tournament respectively. Striker Yang Li netted her sixth goal in the tournament to give China the edge in a 2-1
win over Korea Republic in the third place playoff. The 2015 Women’s World Cup will welcome back the ‘steel
roses’ who had missed the event 3 years ago. Park Eun-sun, the prolific striker for Korea Republic, was named the
Top Scorer after finishing the competition with 6 goals and 2 assists.
EAFF President Mr. Zhang Jian extended his heartiest congratulations to Japan on winning their first-ever Asian
Cup. He firmly believes that, with the commitment and determination, Japan will continue to remain as a
dominant force in any tournaments at international stage. Mr. Zhang Jian also congratulated China and Korea
Republic on qualifying for the FIFA World Cup next year in Canada, indicating that not only did the journey of the
Asian Cup strengthen the competence and resilience of East Asian teams but also showcased their ambition to
impress the world. “I have a profound conviction that Japan, China and Korea Republic are going to have an
impressive run in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup”, said the President.
Congratulations to Japan, China and Korea Republic for the outstanding performances in the Asian Cup. EAFF has
strong confidence that the success of East Asian teams will contribute to the further development of women’s
football in our region and we wish them the very best for future successes in next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup
and the EAFF Women’s East Asian Cup!
