Korea Rep. aiming for 5th victory: East Asian Football Championships 2010 Finals Competition

Korea Rep.won the last tournament in 2008 hence this game is a good start for them. The second day of the tournament which was held on February 7th, sees Korea Rep. competing with the semi-finalist Hong Kong of the August 2009 match. Korea Rep. won Hong Kong-China 5-0 by scoring 4 goals in the first half of the match.

Korea Rep. achieved their goals in the first half mostly through header goals. From the start of the game, Korea Rep. used their agility and speed to give themselves a lead in the first half. Midfielder, KOO Ja Cheol, in the 10th minute made a short pass from a corner kick to defender, LEE Jung Soo, who from the side then passed it to midfielder in the center, KIM Jung Woo who scored the first goal of the match. In the 15th minute, forward LEE Dong Gook, gave a strong shot with his right foot but was blocked by goalkeeper ZHANG Chunhui. In the 24th minute, Korea Rep. midfielder, KIM Bo Kyung, made a free kick from the right side and KOO Ja Cheol stopped the ball with his chest and then shot for the second goal of the game. Hong Kong-China coach, KIM Pan Gon, commented that Korea Rep. displayed very strong performance in their header pass but the Hong Kong-China team was unable to defend this play well enough. On other hand, he praised the Korea Rep. team for showing strong communication throughout the game. In the 32nd minute, KIM Bo Kyung shot a right free kick to Kim JW, who then passed it to LEE Dong Gook, who made a header and scored the third goal of the match.

Although the last match between DPR Korea and Hong Kong-China ended with a 0-0 score but Korea Rep. got 3-0 in the first half against Hong Kong-China and both countries were nominated for the FIFA South Africa World Cup. In the 27th minute, forward, LEE Seung Yeoul, and midfielder, OH Jang Eun, passed the ball consecutively to each other and OH Jang Eun finally scored the goal with his right leg. This was the first time in the history of this tournament that one team scored 4 goals in the first half.

In the 27th minute of the first half, Hong Kong-China received a free kick from the right side. Forward, LI Haiqiang, attempted for the goal but was not successful. Forward, CHAO Pengfei and midfielders, KWOK Kin Pong and LEUNG Chung Pong, tried to bring the ball forward to the goal but was unsuccessful. In the second half, goalkeeping, ZHANG Chunhui, and MVP of the semi-finals, AMBASSA GUY Gerard , formed a powerful pair in the second half to defend against the Korea Rep. offense. AMBASSA GUY Gerard commented that the second half’s performance was much better than the first half but the team only managed 4 shots at the goal. KIM Bo Kyung commented that the midfielder, KIM Jae Sung and forward, NO Byung Jun, who was substituted in the middle of the game, formed a strong formation to score the fifth goal of the match.

Korea Rep. dominated the game with their high pass from the beginning of the game. The 20-years old trio made up of KIM Bo Kyung, KOO Ja Cheol, and LEE Seung Yeoul made a powerful combination, as well as , LEE Dong Gook, who returned to the team after an absence of four years, displayed a strong performance. NO Byung Jun commented that strong team work led to their win today. Korea Rep. coach, HUH Jung Mo gave a high evaluation for the match and commented that the team got tired in the second half but their overall performance was good and the offense play was commendable.
