Korea Rep. scored 4 goals against Chinese Taipei despite strong defense: East Asian Women’s Football Championship 2010 Finals Competition

The second day of East Asian Women’s Football Championship was on February 7th, Korea Rep. national team fought with the Chinese Taipei team. Chinese Taipei was lucky to be have the chance to play in this match due to the withdrawal of the DPR Korea team from the match. Korea Rep. and Chinese Taipei fought in the semi-finals in August 2009. At that time, Korea Rep. was ranked 1st and Chinese Taipei was ranked 2nd. This time, Korea Rep. won Chinese Taipei by 4-0.

Before this tournament, Korea Rep. won U-23 USA in a friendly match on their USA tour. Korea Rep. gradually grew in strength from then on. However, Chinese Taipei defender, LIN Chiung Ying was injured this time. Moreover, both forward, LIN Yu Hui, who secured the most points in the semi-final tournament, and defender, LEE Hua Hsueh, also captain of the team did not participate in this final match. On the other hand, midfielders, LEE Jang Mi (number 10) and MVP, CHO So Hyun, are the key players who were in the offensive play this time round. In the 2nd minute, LEE Jang Mi, attempted a goal with her right foot with a looping shot after dribbling passed her opponents. In the 17th minute, LEE Jang Mi again passed the ball to midfielder, KIM Soo Yun, who took a shot at the goal with her left leg. In the previous semi-final match, where they won 6-0 again Chinese Taipei, the Korea Rep. team used similar strategy of numerous passing and seizing the best chance to score a goal. Centrebacks, LIN Man Ting and YU Hsiu Chin, who are both from the Spanish league, Real Balladlid, performed excellently in their defense in this match. HUANG Feng Chiu also skillfully defended her team against the opponents.

In the 27th minute, defender, KIM Yoo Mi, took a pass but the shot clearer by a Chinese midfielder. However, the ball was retrieved by JEONG Ga Eul, who then scored a goal with her right foot. The Korea Rep. was dominating since the start of the game and the momentum continued throughout the match. In the 28th minute, forward, PARK Hee Young, got a free kick on the right field which was headed by Lee and scored the second goal for Korea Rep. in this match. Hence, Korea Rep. scored 2 goals without much effort in these 2 minutes.

Although the Korea Rep. team is much stronger in terms of physical prowess, Chinese forwards, TAN Wen Lin and TSENG Shu O , managed to secure the ball in their field. In the 24th minute, midfielder, CHEN Ya Huei stole the ball and passed it to TAN Wen Lin. In the 38th minute, Tseng passed the ball to TAN Wen Lin, who attempted a shot at the goal with her left foot.

Despite the fact that the Korea Rep. team was still recovering from jetlag and slight bouts of influenza after their tour to the States, midfielder KIM Jo Hee, gained a penalty kick and Lee put in the third goal from there. KIM Yoo Mi, star defender, put up a strong defense again the Chinese team. The Korea Rep. team attempted 10 shots in the first half and 11 shots in the second half. In the 29th minute, defender, HONG Kyung Suk, passed the ball to forward, YOO Young A, who was substituted in the middle of the game, and she scored the 4th goal for Korea Rep. with her right foot.

Because the Chinese Taipei team was invited at the last moment for this tournament, they did not have sufficient time to be adequately prepared to play in this match. Chinese Taipei coach, CHOU Tai Ying, commented that compared to the last semi-final match in last August, his team put up a much stronger performance by having more possession of the ball, as well as, improving the gap in the score. On the contrary, Korea Rep. coach, LEE Sang Yup, was disappointed with his team performance due to the numerous injuries. Jeon G.E., who scored the first goal of the match, commented that she felt that she was not in her best form today but will put up a much better performance in the next match with China.
