FW HAN Duan scores twice to secure second place for China PR: East Asian Women’s Football Championships 2010 Finals Competition

On the 13th the final day of the East Asian Women’s Football Championships 2010 Finals Competition was held and in the 1st match 3rd placed China PR took on 4th placed Chinese Taipei. FW HAN Duan scored twice as China PR won 3-0. The tournament finished with China PR having a record of 2 wins, 1 loss in 2nd place and Chinese Taipei losing all3 to finish in 4th place.

The previous head to head results between the two teams favoured China PR with 10 straight victories. This match went along with that history right from the start as the more skilful and powerful China PR pressured their opponents. China PR had a chance for a come from behind tournament victory if they could win by a lot of goals and the second match (Korea Rep. vs. Japan) went in favour of Korea Rep. In the 9th minute DF LI Danyang set up MF PANG Fengyue to cross from the right. This was headed by FW XU Yuan, who played up front in this game, as multiple chances came from crosses from each wing. On the other hand, Chinese Taipei who have had a measly 6 shots in their previous 2 matches, played exactly as defensive pillar DF LIN Man Ting said “Basically we have to defend well. And then if we get a chance to score we want to convert it.” Then gaining a defensive rhythm they relied on counter attacks through FW TAN Wen Lin who pressured the opposition defenders with her dribbling and brought in to play MF LIN Ya Han and MF HSIEH I Ling who each had chances to shoot from long range.

There was a big gap in passing and speed as China PR continued to attack. However they couldn’t convert this pressure to goals and in the 23rd minute MF MA Xiaoxu had an unmarked header and XU Yuan couldn’t finish following a 24th minute fumble by the GK. Opportunities were missed from set pieces as well as Chinese Taipei who were now defending with 9 players intensified their defense and the first half ended without surrendering a lead.

In fact with the first half ending 0-0, Chinese Taipei brought on their excellent passer, MF WANG Hsiang Huei as they went in search of an opening goal. However before they could enact a change to remove right back LO Huei Tzu who had appeared vulnerable to crosses, for volante MF HSIEH I Ling China PR made the break through. After just 30 seconds DF LIU Huana’s pass down the right side allowed MA Xiaoxu to put in a cross. HAN Duan lost her marker and leapt in the goalmouth to strike with her right foot and open the scoring.
Then in the 60th minute LI Danyang’s chipped pass set HAN Duan free and she soolly finished with her left foot to extend the lead. However after that they couldn’t keep up the scoring pace. The only other goal was when XU Yuan broke down the left in the 76th minute and crossed to the far post for PANG Fengyue to run onto and score with her right foot. On the other hand Chinese Taipei tried to push forward through the short passing and dribbling of TAN Wen Lin and MF CHEN Hsiao Chuan and in the 84th minute MF TSENG Shu O’s through ball released TAN Wen Lin who had a good chance with her left foot. That shot missed the target as they finished goalless. China PR won 3-0. Double goal scorer HAN Duan praised her opponents saying “Chinese Taipei played well defensively. They may have come away with a result if they could have created scoring chances as well.” But head coach SHANG Ruihua said “We tried very hard and had some excellent moments but looking at the whole game we made some bad mistakes.” The number of mistakes cost them and regardless of the winner of the next match their chances of winning the tournament ended here. China PR’s opportunity to win their first ever East Asian Women’s Football Championships went unfulfilled for now.
